This day we continued on the fireplace, mantel renovation.  Yesterday we got the wallboard on the top and today Jer started taking the brick off the base of the hearth.  It was difficult to get down that close to the floor and pry off the brick facing and then pull out the staples, but it finally was done and then Jer put on the wallboard.  That took some time to fit it just right and work around the electrical plug on the end where the previous installers had broken the boards behind the plug.  When that was finally done, we started on the mantel.

We needed to saw off part of the mantel to bring it down to the top of the fireplace opening.  It was 8 7/8inches too tall.  We took it to the patio and Jer carefully measured and sawed it off just right.  When we put it up to the fireplace wall we also noticed that the top edge extended over the window an inch or two so he also sawed off some of the top edge on each side.

After getting all that done, we saw that the mantel needs some supports under the edges of the actual fireplace opening because it doesn't lie flush with the opening.  Jer will adjust that tomorrow.  He has done a lot of work today and it's time to rest.
