Today was still a continuation of the fireplace/mantel refurb. Since they don't have a Kwal here which is Dad's favorite paint, we searched out a Sherwin Williams in Baytown. We sauntered in, leaned up to the counter and said, give us a gallon of your best in this color please. And the guy behind the counter said our best is $75 a gallon. How many do you want? We said, uuhhh, how much is your next best? he said it's $70. How much is your least expensive? It's only $40 a gallon. But we're having a sale for 30% off on Monday if you want to come back then. We said, we'll come back Monday. Then we went to Home Depot and bought a gallon of Glidden Premium for $20 a gallon and considered ourselves lucky. We also bought lots of other little doodads like knobs for the kitchen cabinets, a brace for the shelf over the wet bar, another faucet aerator for the kitchen, a kit to fix the bathroom sink drain, and some 2x2s for the mantel frame.
When we got home we started on the mantel. Dad had to saw a board several times down the long way to get just the right angles for the filler next to the fireplace opening. After that he glued them on and fastened them with screws and is now letting it dry. He also sanded and mudded the fireplace wall before we left and is waiting for that to dry before he can sand it again. It takes a lot longer to dry here as you can imagine. When it's dry he believes that it will be ready to texture and paint. I find that hard to believe because it usually takes days and days of sanding and mudding, but he says this was a good fit and should be ready. I will not argue.
You see that the mantel is shorter than it was before. But don't worry, it's just right on top of the hearth.
Tomorrow hopefully he will sand and texture and maybe paint tomorrow or Monday. We will see how long it takes it to dry.
I can tell you that this was lots of fun when we got here and got started on all the projects, but now I am really ready for it to be DONE! I am grateful for the man's patience again and again. He just keeps on plugging on and on.
After he stopped work we read for a while and then went to Popeye's Chicken for dinner. He has been wanting to go there and have some chicken and shrimp. I got the dark meat two pieces and he got fish and popcorn shrimp. It was good but they didn't have the butterfly shrimp yet. Coming soon. I guess we'll just have to go back again. :o)
