Feeling pretty good about our painting progress yesterday, we decided to work on the bathrooms for a little while. Jer had to remove the toilet on the main floor so that the flooring can go in. When he removed the toilet that had been working sluggishly he discovered a rock and a toothbrush! Who knew? It should work better when it gets replaced after the flooring is in.
And today Jer started on the lower bathroom. We mean to replace the whole sink cabinet. It has been really ugly ever since we moved here. We have planned to replace it for some time, but now finally got around to it. It was a job getting out the old one because it was built in place, with the wallboard carved out to fit the top. Made of 2x4s inside and coming apart below. Finally the man got it all out and I got it cleaned up and the remains taken away while he went to Home Depot for the parts he would need.
We ended up making three more trips to Home Depot to finally get all that we needed because when we got the new cabinet in place it needs to come out farther than the previous one and he needs to extend all the pipes. He loves plumbing as you know. But he wants to make it right for the new people.
The new cabinet almost in place. On one of the trips to Home Depot we bought a nice new top to finish it off. We will use the same sink since it's pretty.
In other news, we had an uninvited visitor this past week.
I was standing in the kitchen and saw a little gray mouse streak along the baseboard and disappear into the cabinet. We tried to find it but it had totally gone. That same night we were watching TV and saw it run along the chair rail on the side of the room. And about an hour later out of the corner of his eye Jer saw a mouse run along the sofa back behind him. Needless to say we retreated to the kitchen and watched something else on the computer. The next day we bought some traps and sorry to say, the next morning there was a little gray mouse in one of them. It's good to be free of him, but I'm sorry that he had to die. We have had no other occurrences so he may have been the only one that just got around everywhere.
With all our cleaning and dusting and sanding and so on, I have been plagued with sneezing and dripping nose and coughing and miserableness. I can't decide if it's allergy or a cold. I hope now that most of the smelly, messy stuff is done that it will clear up and I can get back to normal. I will be leaving on the 10th to go to Illinois and don't want to bring any troublesome germs with me.
Yesterday I also put back on most of the electrical face plates and swept the floors and cleaned the bathrooms. It feels more like an empty home now and not so much like a construction zone. It has been a long and hard several weeks but we can see the end now. We still need to paint all the baseboards and door frames and the living room and the outside doors and put the carpeting on the garage steps. But we can see that that's almost all that's left of the remodel. There is still some packing of kitchen stuff. But we feel confident that the house will be ready for the flooring when they are ready to bring it.
I like the new look of the paint. The walls are all the same color but the lighting makes it look two toned and beautiful. It feels serene. The living room will be a little darker. I'm interested to see what that looks like. So far we are really pleased with the results of all our work.
